‘Julian Banks Group’ features some of Australia’s finest musicians collaborating with stellar Indonesian percussionist Cepi Kusmiadi on the Kendang Sunda*.
Kusmiadi’s bubbling magic on this beautiful traditional Indonesian instrument creates the perfect bed for the modern grooves and melodic sensibilities of Banks’ original compositions, and should provide a unique experience for Australian audiences, perhaps unfamiliar with the sound of Kendang Sunda.
After many successful performances in Indonesia including the 2016 Ubud Jazz Festival, this group are showcasing this music for the very first time in Australia at WIBF ’17, held on the St Kilda foreshore (http://wonderfulindonesia-festival.com.au) so come down and treat your ears to ‘Julian Banks Group’.
. *The Kendang Sunda is a two-headed drum used by people across many southeast Asian countries, but the oldest records of this instrument can be found in Indonesia's ancient temples, including ninth century Borobudur.
